Hand of God
Plaster and books
The Hand of God is a sculptural piece of book art, with plaster fists punching through three books. This triptic was created from my observations and response to the St Mary le Wigford Church, upon entering the church I was greeted by a great sense of power in relation to religion and God. Throughout this project the Hand of God developed into the cartoonist act of punching a hole through a book. During the creation of this piece, I wanted to replicate white porcelain hands which I had found attached to a Baptism board within the church, using plaster while re-imagining the hand gestures to symbolise power. The identical books used in the piece were taken from the Church, and could represent the Bibles found inside the building too. Deceiving the viewers is part of the work, as the piece Hand of God was placed on the Alter, viewers automatically believed that the trio of books were Bibles (when they were not) and the fists could have represented God.
